The senior member of the project management team and works with project managers to ensure that competent discipline support is maintained in the department and assigned to capital projects, engineering studies, and programs. There is strong coordination, accountability with other engineering disciplines.
- Acts as a discipline liaison for all engineering discipline, activities between Organization Americas and Organization global organization.
- Interacts with senior representatives. Maintains a network of global external peers and associations to allow for continual benchmarking of current best industry practices.
- Coordinates the recruitment, evaluation, training, and development of discipline personnel.
- Responsible for tracking discipline execution deliverables, including schedule compliance, scope adherence, and technical quality directly impacting project results and budget adherence.
- Provides technical advice, guidance, and counsel to global Organization representatives. There is a strong “Freedom to Act” accountability, based on incumbent’s technical know-how, experience, and responsibilities.
- Leads the development of strategic and/or operational policies, practices and procedures. Provides leadership and strategy for safety and code compliance programs and issues.
- Conceives, defines, evaluates, and promotes innovative engineering and other opportunities for constant improvement of services provided for the Organization global organization. Continually plans organize, integrates and controls the discipline function at a Program level. The problems encountered are frequently complex, wide-ranging, challenging and unique, requiring strong problem-solving talents and urgent resolution.
- Maintains a skilled workforce and manages the staffing levels in concert with the Project execution needs. May manage personnel at multiple locations. Approves, and is directly responsible for, all discipline deliverables.
Value Added:
This position provides Organization global organization with discipline technical support and expertise. The incumbent is responsible for the management of the CSA discipline, providing expert technical advice and guidance in support of the Organization capital investment program totaling over $800MM per year. He/she is the chief spokesperson for the organization in all technical matters relating to his/her discipline within the global organization. The position represents the organization on technical committees both internal and external to Organization when requested by management. The position supports the project managers in the execution of projects and studies by working with the project team to ensure competent discipline personnel are assigned to the projects and expected results are achieved. This position is responsible for the management of recruitment, training, development, and evaluation of discipline personnel to ensure long-term technical objectives are met. The Incumbent promotes and coordinates the optimal use of organization ’s technical expertise in all engineering functions. This Group Head maintains a reputation for competence in his/her field inside and outside of the company. This position is expected to be an active member and leader of global Organization communities. Whenever this position is involved in any external engineering organizations or activities, he/she is expected to represent organization ’interests.
Work Relations:
The incumbent is a member of the Organization Project Management team and works closely with local and global leadership, project managers, discipline personnel, and other technical/operational personnel. This person interacts with organization global counterparts, committees, professional societies, EPC firms, and external organizations to maintain effective, competent discipline knowledge within the organization. Routinely interacts with global senior company management.
Qualifications:
- As a minimum, a Bachelor of Science Civil, Structural or Architectural engineering degree is required (or equivalent engineering degree) with a minimum of 25 years’ experience in the CSA area.
- The incumbent must have a comprehensive engineering knowledge in his/her discipline and broad practical experience to be recognized as organization ’s technical leader.
- Experience must include design knowledge, construction management, project management, forensic engineering, and group management. Emergency and disaster response and expertise are expected from this position.
- The incumbent must be able to assimilate technical knowledge quickly to maintain advancements in his/her field of expertise.
- The incumbent must have solid skills in management, estimating, planning, communication, coordination, decision making, negotiation, coaching, and in quality and safety awareness.
- Furthermore, human relationship skills such as leadership and influencing, and interpersonal skills, are imperative to coordinate the wide variety of tasks within a group of professional people to meet the demands of organization management, project managers, and other divisional technical personnel.
- This position requires Professional Registration in 3 or more states, as determined by the current business production plans. May be designated as the “Responsible Engineer” for Organization Professional Firm Registration in states where the organization is licensed.

- This position requires innovative thinking to provide solutions to complex construction problems. Must possess a broad knowledge of accepted construction techniques as well as awareness of cutting-edge products and methods. A sense of urgency is expected for immediate construction problem resolution.
- The Group Head’s primary challenge is to provide technical advice, guidance, and counsel to Organization Americas Management, in addition to the management of the discipline group in question.
- The incumbent must remain abreast of new technologies and developments that can help him/her maintain the level of competence required to serve in this capacity.
- The position is required to conceive, promote, and develop programs and practices while successfully influencing appropriate management decisions. The incumbent applies his/her technical expertise and knowledge in his/her discipline while leading engineering activities. This has a major impact on the efficient use of capital expenditures and the profitability of the organization.
- It is the joint responsibility of the CSA Group Head to work with the project managers to initiate the development of technical concepts for projects ensure that agreed upon practices are technically acceptable and followed reach consensus on staffing and de-staffing of discipline, resources and to take responsibility for the discipline personnel performance. It is the CSA Group Head’s responsibility to evaluate outside engineering contractors for their ability to assist with the execution of capital projects.
- This position reports to the Vice-President, Project Management, and Engineering. The position has a significant impact on the management of effective discipline engineering skills within Organization Americas. In addition, this position contributes to the successful implementation of organization capital programs exceeding $500MM per year.
- This position requires successful management of several projects and assignments simultaneously, including major projects exceeding $100MM.

- University degree in an engineering discipline (BSc or advanced) or, another appropriate scientific discipline or advanced education.
- At least 5 years combined experience in engineering and/or, manufacturing, proven track record of working in and/or, maintenance management (including turn-around) roles within the chemical, industry.
